These people are so afraid of offending one group's beliefs that they go totally the other way and offend another group's beliefs. There is a middle ground here but I doubt the ones who look for diversity will ever find it.
Now the problem I have with all organised religion and many non believers is they want their views only and are intolerant of other views no matter how much they claim otherwise. They seek to use the law, the media and other means to spout their beliefs. They cry diversity when their beliefs are infringed upon or when they infringe upon those of others.
Diversity is about tolerance all the way. I consider myself a Christian and I wouldn't want to see the Jesus covered in ants as I agree that it is offensive. However, I would say the same if the display showed Mohammed or Buddha covered in ants. Attacking other religions is wrong, plain wrong and I think those who do, do so because they have no true testimony of their own faith. Therefore, they seek solace bashing others.
One last point, in my recent book, "Rock And Roll Children" I make mention in the story of people who go to concerts and had to run a gauntlet of Jesus freaks who felt compelled to try to stop those concert goers from having a good time. This too is intolerance, but I found it best to ignore these people. Why can't people keep their beliefs to themselves instead of trying to force them down everyone else's throats by whatever means necessary.

Re: The Intolerance of Diversity

EXCELLENT summary of the situation Poz. However what's missing from your piece is what would happen if the "artist" had done the same thing but used the image of Mohammed instead of Christ? You don't have to answer because we all know the answer. I say, whenever this sort of crap raises it ugly head again, the first question to asked is, "What if we replaced Christ with Mohammed - would this fly?" Whatever the cause or intention, if they want to use religion as part of their message and want our tax dollars to support it, then just ask the question. I mean really, if the Islamic radicals can issue a Fatwah against authors and cartoonists for perceive offenses to their religion. Okay. But, it's a 2-way street named "Diversity," except the reality is it's a 1-way street. You got it right, "Diversity does not seek coexistence. Diversity seeks to besmirch, expunge and obliterate what it doesn’t like." Kill and slaughter those that not agree with you. The grand plan is underway . . . time to wake-up America, don't let these seemly small Islamic encroachments stand. For them, it's not about diversity. Stand-up and speak out and defend our laws and US Constitution before we lose it.

Re: Declare War on Trees

There was a slight malfunction with the propulsion system on the E23F autonomous weapon system. I agree with all 3 points and believe 2 are achievable during this term. The new GOP majority in the House will need our continued backing and loud voices to keep them on message. Once the newbies get inside the "system" they seem to forget why they are there and who sent them. The GOP needs to once-and-for-all end the wasteful earmark process . . . it's nothing more than sanctioned corruption and must end. One more point to add - pass a realistic budget!!!

I hope the GOP doesn't get obsessed and distracted with investigations, etc. and instead uses their time on productive matters like seriously debating the recommendations of the Debt Commission, preparing a replacement health care plan, and getting control of the Fed.

Re: Big government, elections and the will of the people

WOW!
You are absolutely CORRECT in this one! That makes sense. The world is more complicated than you think.
"Precipice of socialism" is a meaningless phrase if I've ever heard one. Virtually every economy in the world is a mixed economy. It's not capitalism OR socialism, it's always a mixture. And guess what? The public sector has been losing jobs, for MONTHS. The private sector has been gaining them. That's SMALLER government. We have "socialized" police service, fire service, education, transportation. Do you not want everyone to have equal access to at least police, fire and education? It used to be the core Republican value to provide equality of access rather than equality of outcome. Now Republicans don't seem to care about any kind of equality.
BIGGER government would be putting laws in our private lives. For example, should a citizen being gay matter to the government? To most conservatives, the answer is yes. As a result, openly gay people are not allowed to serve in the military (my best friend is gay and my oldest friend is in Paktika hunting down Taliban [and my dad's a navy vet, my uncle was career navy, my mom's parents were both in the Army Air Corps, my nephew was in the Marines], so I know both sides). The Obama administration has been tougher on immigration than the Bush administration was (and I don't agree with either of them in general!) The Obama administration opposed it because it's blatant racial profiling. It's BIGGER government if you want the government to have more say over who is allowed in our country. Real libertarians believe in open borders. (Which I don't quite agree with either, I think there's a middle ground.)
The scientific consensus is on anthropogenic global warming. You may as well not believe in electromagnetism. Bjorn Lomborg, once paraded by the anti-climate change crowd, has recently come out in favor of strong action against global warming. Russia was openly enthusiastic about CC because it may open the Arctic sea to year-round navigation (which our Navy brass is concerned about) until their country caught fire earlier this year and they had to stop grain exports so they wouldn't starve.
Fact is, conservatives didn't give a shit about big government for the past eight years. Additional executive powers, like record-breaking numbers of Presidential signing statements, and claims to executive privilege by all members of the executive branch, including mere aids to the VP, not to mention additional powers for intelligence agencies to circumvent habaeus corpus (a right of the Anglo-Saxon world since 1215) and other constitutional rights to privacy, were widely celebrated on the right for protecting us against evil-doers. Bush is to blame for that. So was Congress (both parties).
Bush and Congress (both parties), as well as past administrations including Reagan and Clinton and their Congresses, laid the ground work for the economic collapse (and the recent oil spill) through poor regulation (eg, appointing industry heads to regulatory agencies,
You style yourself a thinker, yet you have no idea what you're writing about. You don't know what socialism is, you probably don't know what a scientific theory is (judging on your stance on global warming). You bash Obama for blaming Bush (who deserves blame), yet did you bash Bush for not taking blame? His administration passed the buck FAR more than Obama's. Katrina? Blame FEMA. Torture? Blame the torturers, not the people who authorized it. Iraq? Blame Chalabi, we were lied to, too! And the Reagan worship is so tired... Iran Contra, anyone? That alone is the mark of a poor Presidency.
You know who deserves the blame? Voters for decades for electing people who promise them nice things, but then don't want to pay for them. That's why we're in debt. Members of both parties get federal dollars allocated to projects in their districts so they can tell their constituents "Hey, I pulled through for you! Reelect me!" People EXPECT the government to be there for them but they don't want to pay for it. It's infantile. It's also infantile to cry about socialism when it's just a bogeyman. What rights have been taken way? Tell me. What rights have been proposed to be taken away? TELL ME. Tell me, what industries have been nationalized? Tell me. What industries have been proposed to be nationalized? Health care? Nope. What got passed was essentially the Republican plan from 1993, or Mitt Romney's MA plan (though I think they cover kids under 5 universally). It's private insurance. It's not public. Stop complaining about things that aren't there. Jesus god.

Re: The “YES WE CAN Blame Someone Else” Administration

Mark,
It's going to take a little while for me to get totally used to the new interface, that I can do things on either side...Appreciate the comments about the new interface and I know Poz will appreciate the comments on the post.

Cheers, Rob

Re: The “YES WE CAN Blame Someone Else” Administration

Excellent post! Among the first pilgrims to this new land, Puritans and Separatists left their homes in the hopes of practicing their form of Protestantism without oppression from the established "state" religion of the Church of England. The intent was not to make a new life or a new religion, but to establish a model community of piety that could serve as a beacon for the rest of Europe. Through the test of time, however, these and other settlers found that Europe was not the place to practice their religion freely. After a time, communities and settlements began to dot the Eastern Seaboard, thus resulting in what we know today as “America”. The America of old was indeed a Christian nation. In fact, a clause was included in the First Amendment to the Constitution to protect Christianity from the corruption of bureaucratic institutions.

"The last thing we need is to fuel the flames of anti American hate while our service members are in the thick of things. If we start to outlaw or curtail one religion, what then will be the next. If we outlaw one book, what will be the next book. That road is a slippery slope that is best left untrodden"

As Ronald Reagan once said, "Admittedly, there's a risk in any course we follow other than this, but every lesson of history tells us that the greater risk lies in appeasement, and this is the specter our well-meaning liberal friends refuse to face—that their policy of accommodation is appeasement, and it gives no choice between peace and war, only between fight or surrender. If we continue to accommodate, continue to back and retreat, eventually we have to face the final demand—the ultimatum.”

Re: The Man behind the Mosque

A note from the Editors. We never questioned the right to build a mosque. As noted, there are thousands of mosques throughout the United States and over a hundred around New York City. The issue is about appropriateness, compassion and sensitivity.

Approximately 70% of Americans asked that the mosque be built anywhere except on the bones of Americans, Muslim and non-Muslim, killed on 9/11. Yet, Imam Rauf, who said Bin Laden was made in the U.S., that the U.S. was an accessory to the 9/11 attacks, and that the U.S. has more Muslim blood on its hands than Al Qaeda refuses to consider any compromise. We feel Rauf should explain why he is so intolerant and lacks compassion for the feelings of a majority of Americans. And
because there are no answers, we feel that Rauf seeks the controversy that will come with a mosque near Ground Zero. However, asking questions is far different than calling for a religion to be
“outlawed;” something we do not support.

As we said, many of us served to protect the right to religious freedom. But this issue is not about the right, but the implementation of that right by a person who has made a number of negative statements about the United States and apparently lacks the compassion that most Americans.

We absolutely appreciate your feedback! That issue is merely one of geography. If two blocks away (and unobservable from the site) is too close, what distance is appropriate? There is no rational answer to this question. There were muslim Americans killed by the terrorists in the attacks on that day in September. They also should be able to pray within the area. The very action of debating the center is, in itself, a rally to radical Islamics who see America as fighting a war against Islam. We must remember that Islam, as well as Christianity grew out of Judaism and the Old Testament. We preach freedom of religion in this country, not freedom of Christian religion. There are many religions with which I don't agree. Islam is one of them. Satanisim, Buddisim, Snake handling Pentacostals, and others fall into this same category as far as I'm concerned. However, we must practice what it is that we preach. Comparing this to Nazis and Hitler is idiotic in the extreme. The last thing we need is to fuel the flames of anti American hate while our service members are in the thick of things. If we start to outlaw or curtail one religion, what then will be the next. If we outlaw one book, what will be the next book. That road is a slippery slope that is best left untrodden. Remember, Muslims were killed at the WTC as well as Christians. We need not grow a backbone, we need only use our brain without the input of hateful rhetoric and misleading propaganda from any side.

Mayor "Napoleon" Bloomberg and his backstabbing cronies (including Obama and Pelosi) must have a $tupendou$ rea$on for wanting a sharia-hugging mosque near Ground Zero - a mosque threatening the collapse of the Islamophile Democrats come November!
God-haters and America-haters may not realize how high the collective temperature has now risen in the hearts of true American patriots - many of whom are now willing to die for America right here in America if they get pushed completely over the line by traitors!
Since the nation's headquarters for treason is the White House, readers can enjoy related material if they Google "Obama Avoids Bible Verses" and "Obama Supports Public Depravity." (This police-protected kinkiness, observable by children, occurs in "Madam" Nancy Pelosi's brothel district; Google "Zombietime" and see "Up Your Alley Fair"!)
Also Google "Sandra Bernhard, Larry David, Kathy Griffin, Bill Maher, Sarah Silverman" in addition to Googling "Obama...destined to become a black-slavery avenger."
And by all means visit Googleland and type in "Government-Approved Illegals" and "Un-Americans Fight Franklin Graham."
I hope Mayor Bloomberg, dressed as Napoleon, will thoroughly enjoy his mosquerade party!
PS - Since Jane Fonda still loves leftist causes, here's a one-liner I penned during the Vietnam War era that the big Kansas City paper ran: "I'm not Fonda Jane; her Laosy remarks Hanoi me!"
